چکیده

We present a micrograting-based force sensor integrated with a surface micromachined silicon-nitride probe for penetration and injection into Drosophila embryos. The probe is supported by springs of a known spring constant, and the penetration force is determined from displacement measurements using a high-resolution, miniaturized optical encoder that is designed to only be sensitive to axial deflections of the probe. The optical-encoder force sensor exhibits configurable sensitivity and dynamic range, allowing monitoring over a wide range of forces. The periodicity of the encoder response can be used for calibration of the injector displacement and to obtain information about the localized elastic properties of the target. We used an force sensor with a measured spring constant of 1.85 N/m for penetration experiments on Drosophila embryos, and found a penetration force of 52.5 N (±13.2%) and a membrane displacement of 58 m (±5.2%). © 2003 Elsevier B.V. Silicon microsurgery-force sensor based on diffractive optical MEMS encoders

This paper presents a micrograting-based force sensor integrated with a surface micromachined silicon-nitride probe suitable for characterizing microsurgery force on a single cell or embryo. The probe is supported by springs of a known spring constant, and the surgical penetration force is determined from displacement measurements. The opticalencoder force sensor exhibits conŽgurable sensitivit...

Fabrication and Characterization of the Fiber Optical Taper for a Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor

For a fiber optical surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor a short part of its cladding should be removed to coat a thin layer of a metal. Usually this is problematic when an optical fiber with small core diameter is used. In this paper, a new method using µliter droplet of the HF acid for short fiber optical taper fabrication is reported. Using this method in a multi-mode optical fiber w...

Morphological, structural and photoresponse characterization of ZnO nanostructure films deposited on plasma etched silicon substrates

ZnO nanostructure films were deposited by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering on etched silicon (100) substrates using dry Ar/SF6 plasma, at two etching times of 5 min and 30 min, and on non etched silicon surface. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) technique was employed to investigate the elements contents for etched substrates as well as ZnO films, where it is found to be stoichiometric. Su...

A low-power, high-sensitivity micromachined optical magnetometer

We demonstrate an optical magnetometer based on a microfabricated Rb vapor cell in a micromachined silicon sensor head. The alkali atom density in the vapor cell is increased by heating the cell with light brought to the sensor through an optical fiber, and absorbed by colored filters attached to the cell windows. A second fiber-optically coupled beam optically pumps and interrogates the atoms....

Micromachined Microphones with Diffraction-based Optical Interferometric Readout and Electrostatic Actuation

Micromachined microphones that use a diffraction-based optical method for integrated interferometric detection of diaphragm displacement are described. With optoelectronics integration, this approach yields highly sensitive microphones in mm-cube volumes. Furthermore, the electrical port of the device, which is freed by optical detection, is used for electrostatic actuation of the microphone di...
